Coronavirus (COVID-19): How it is impacting Google Organic Search Visibility

Coronavirus is a highly searched term these days. It has impacted a lot of industries and online businesses. Considering the ongoing crisis, businesses are finding innovative ways to reach the audience and provide them services virtually.

COVID-19 has also changed the online search behavior and the type of results displayed by the search engines. Take a look at the impact of Coronavirus on Google’s organic search visibility of various industries.

1.E-commerce websites

Due to lockdowns in many parts of the world, people can’t visit the stores to get regular groceries and goods. In such cases, people try to contact online stores to get essential goods like face masks, thermometers, hand sanitizers, and toilet paper. These e-commerce websites have increased search traffic from the last couple of weeks. People are turning to the internet to get products related to the COVID pandemic. These searches have drastically increased online because of the unavailability of products or their raised rates at local stores. Growing demand for groceries and pharmacies has increased a lot of searches in these categories. Whereas, e-commerce sites selling luxury goods and services have lost their organic traffic enormously. People are looking out more for essential goods rather than luxury items.

2. Health and wellness

People nowadays are mostly searching for information related to COVID-19. They are searching for information online related to health and wellness. The searches mostly include precautions, remedies, symptoms and general information about the Coronavirus.

There’s a rapid increase in the users searching for content related to Coronavirus and how to stay healthy and safe. Many people try to contact their doctors through websites to seek necessary information. The most common search during these times is the symptoms and the best practices. Health and wellness have become an important factor these days. People also search for foods to increase their immunity and exercise that can be done indoors. Wellness websites have gained a tremendous hike in recent times.

3. News and Media

Searches for news related to COVID-19 has increased tremendously. News and media channels have gained extreme popularity with a large number of impressions and traffic. People are continuously keeping themselves updated with the latest information, facts, and regulations. The public needs to know the important updates and so they rely on news and media to know about the latest information. In this case, news and media have a lot of traffic. The publishers are keeping people engaged with the latest news and also trying to provide the necessary services and resources wherever required. Media is providing content to the public regularly and responsibly which in turn is attracting a lot of audiences and keeping them engaged in their sites.

4. Travel and Tourism

The travel and tourism industry is the most affected industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All the nations have imposed travel restrictions to control the spreading of Coronavirus. These restrictions have impacted the travel industries across the world which includes the cruise, hotels, and airlines. Searches related to hotels, cruises and airlines have experienced a tremendous decrease in traffic. The travel-related searches have also changed their nature due to the pandemic. A few months ago, when people searched the terms like “China Travel” the intention of search had a meaning to plan a vacation, but today the search would be more likely to get information about the travel restrictions in China.

5. Food-related Websites

Food-related websites are also doing well during the pandemic. People are exploring recipes on various websites to bring out creativity during the quarantine. This has brought a great increase in traffic and impressions to the recipe and food-related websites. This is also because the majority of the restaurants are shut down and people are looking for new and interesting recipes to cook at home. People are trying to fight their boredom these days and the kitchen is the best place where they can be creative and productive. Keeping in mind this fact, websites have opted for this change by providing search results for terms like “recipes to cook during quarantine”, “Coronavirus self-isolation recipes” and many more.

Coronavirus is affecting every industry and changing our lifestyle as well. Its impact on organic search depends on the type of industry.
